In early August of 2024, Dr Susan Davis hosted the Western Downs Wildflowering Retreat, exploring the rich floral heritage of the region around Miles.

Funding from the Regional Arts Development Fund Program supported the curators and artist from the 'Wildflowering by Design' exhibition to travel to and facilitate the three-day retreat. A group of Western Downs local creatives engaged in knowledge sharing, professional development and skills exchange in various art and design media. Specific workshops held included drawing using botanical inks, sun printing and pattern making.

A highlight of the retreat was a tour through the Gurulmundi area, with a talk from Chinchilla based First Nations man Richard Turnbull about the plants in the region and their uses. The project not only gave Western Downs local creatives a chance to connect, but to explore new techniques in an inclusive and encouraging environment.

We would like to congratulate Dr Susan Davis for her efforts in organising such an enlightening and inspiring event. Further new works and design products will be developed by local artists to complement the touring 'Wildflowering by Design' exhibition scheduled for 25 July - 13 September 2025 at the Miles Dogwood Crossing Gallery.
