A traineeship or apprenticeship with Western Downs Regional Council is the perfect way to 'Kickstart Your Career'.

Council is committed to providing workforce development opportunities for locals in the region as part of its Early Career Program.

The program equips participants with practical skills and experience that pave the way for long-term career success in the region.

Current Vacancies

Applications for the 2027 'Kickstart Your Career' traineeships and apprenticeships are now open and will close Friday 14 August. Successful applications are set to begin February 2027.

Role Descriptions 

Parks and Recreation Apprentice

  • Parks and landscaping maintenance.
  • Field work and operating a variety of small machinery.

Treatment Operator's Assistant Trainee

  • Operate/maintain water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Collecting and analysing water and wastewater samples for water quality.
  • Monitoring water treatment processes.

 

Network Operator's Assistant Trainee

  • Water and wastewater pipe repair (e.g. breaks in water mains).
  • Field work and operating civil machinery within the water network teams, including Council plumbers.

 

Civil Construction Trainee

  • Assist with site preparation, setup, and basic construction tasks. 
  • Learn to operate tools and small machinery safely under supervision. 
  • Support skilled workers in tasks like concreting, pipe laying, and earthworks within the Construction, Maintenance and Concrete crews.
  • Follow safety procedures and construction plans.

 

Information Communication Technology

  • Support Council staff by resolving requests and incidents.
  • Administer hardware, software and cloud solutions.
  • Develop technical troubleshooting skills.

 

KickStart Trainee

  • For individuals who may need additional support.

 

School Based Trainee

  • Must be in grades 10 or 11 in the first year of the traineeship.
