Landfill gas project cuts emissions and creates community benefits

A major landfill gas project at the Winfields Road Waste Management Centre in Jandowae is delivering strong environmental outcomes while creating a new revenue stream for Western Downs Regional Council.
Delivered through a partnership between Western Downs Regional Council and LGI Limited, the system captures methane gas produced by decomposing waste and safely burns it off using an enclosed flare.
This process delivers immediate and measurable reductions in harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Since beginning operation in October 2025, the system has prevented more than 7,500 tonnes of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere by April 2026.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith said the project was a significant step forward in reducing Council’s carbon footprint and improving landfill operations.
“Reducing harmful methane gas emissions is a big win for the Western Downs community and the environment,” Cr Smith said.
“Uncontrolled landfill gas is one of the largest contributors to Council’s emissions profile, and this project is helping us address that in a practical and effective way.”
The landfill gas system collects methane through a network of wells and pipes installed across the site and directs it to a flare, where the gas is safely combusted. This approach also helps reduce odours and improves overall landfill performance.
The project was delivered at no cost to ratepayers, with installation and ongoing operation funded through the generation of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
Under the agreement, Council receives 35 per cent of the revenue generated from these carbon credits, creating an ongoing financial return for the community.
Cr Smith said the partnership supports Council’s long-term sustainability targets while delivering real benefits locally.
“This project supports our goal to significantly reduce emissions over time, while also improving air quality, reducing odour and creating a new income stream for our community,” he said.
“It’s a strong example of how we can work with industry partners to deliver smarter, more sustainable outcomes for the Western Downs.”
In addition to environmental benefits, the system includes improvements to landfill operations, such as reducing the volume of liquid waste requiring treatment and helping waste break down more efficiently.
Council also has the option to expand the system in future if gas generation is sufficient.
The landfill gas system will continue to be monitored, with performance reported to Council through regular updates, as the region progresses towards its long-term emissions reduction goals.
