Council trainee takes the win at regional Queensland Training Awards
Published on 25 August 2025
Western Downs Regional Council's own Gerhard Mortimer was announced as the Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year and Equity Student of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards for the Darling Downs South West region.
The Queensland Training Awards shine a light on the amazing individuals and organisations from across the state in their innovative approaches to vocational education and training.
Western Downs Regional Council was also recognised as a finalist for the Large Employer of the Year for the Darling Downs South West region.
This year's awards were held in Toowoomba earlier this month, bringing together finalists from various industries across the Darling Downs South West region.
After sustaining a life changing injury in 2020, Mr Mortimer was forced to re-evaluate his career path. Having always worked in hands on roles, Mr Mortimer was determined to push past barriers and develop new skills to successfully transition into a corporate environment.
Trainee and Equity Student of the Year Mr Mortimer said the recognition was a huge honour and he hopes to inspire those around him to make the most of every opportunity.
"After having to re-enter the workforce, Council provided the security, support and balance that I needed to succeed", Mr Mortimer said.
"The comprehensive support system from my team at Council and my Registered Training Organisation allowed me to overcome barriers and thrive in my training journey.
"I am particularly passionate about encouraging and supporting others, regardless of age, background or ability, to persevere in the face of challenges".
Now a Graduate Administration Officer at Council, Mr Mortimer says he is excited to expand upon the skills he has learned through his traineeship.
Western Downs Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Jodie Taylor said the recognition was a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact that training and development can have, not only for individuals, but for the entire community.
"Gerhard’s story is a shining example of what’s possible when talent meets opportunity. His determination, courage, and drive to grow are exactly what make the Western Downs such a remarkable place," Mrs Taylor said.
"At Council, we believe investing in our people is investing in the future of our region.
"Every traineeship, every new skill learned, strengthens not just our workforce, but the fabric of our community. Our people are the heart of the Western Downs, and when they succeed, our region thrives.
"Right now, we have 38 early career positions across Council, each one providing a pathway for local people to learn, grow, and contribute.
"We’re committed to creating these opportunities because we know that building local skills today means building stronger communities for tomorrow."
Mr Mortimer will go on to represent the Darling Downs South West region at the state final on Saturday 13 September 2025 in Brisbane.
