The region's youth were invited to think creatively and produce a street art design that reflected on the theme ‘How are public arts and culture important to your mental wellbeing?'. After careful deliberation, three winners have now been selected and will be given the chance to have their work replicated and displayed in their hometown.

The project 'Create Your Headspace', funded by the Queensland Government’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Package, saw some amazing designs submitted by talented individuals from across the region as they interpreted what the theme meant to them.

Councillor Kaye Maguire, Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development, said this new initiative was a fantastic chance for the region's youth to show off their talent, while also reinforcing the importance of discussing mental health.

“Our young people are our region's future, so it is extremely important for them to be given the opportunity to be heard and seen. Providing an opportunity for aspiring young artists to share their thoughts and ideas is something Council prides itself on" Cr Maguire said.

We could not have been more in awe of the well thought out and creative submissions we received. It was tough, but the winning entries are simply incredible. I can't wait to see our community's wonderful new street art and the artists themselves receive the recognition they deserve through their artist's profiles which will be promoted through Council's digital platforms over the coming months.

Chelsey Cave, a young artist from Dalby and one of the competition winners, said that projects like 'Create Your Headspace' are important for the youth of the region to help spark creativity and bring their imagination to life.

"When I was creating my sculpture, 'A Mind Map of the Western Downs', I wanted it to represent a mind map of the people's experiences within the Western Downs and how these experiences have shaped us and our region" Miss Cave said.

"Being one of the competition's winning artists has given me something to be proud of, to be recognised for something that I created myself! This project was not just about winning, it was about expressing myself and trying my best, which was a reward in itself”.

Keep an eye out across Council's platforms over coming months as we share the artist profiles of the 'Create Your Headspace' Street Art Project 2022 winners.
