Western Downs celebrates its newest residents

The Western Downs has officially welcomed its newest Australians as part of an official Citizenship Ceremony held at the Dalby Events Centre on Monday.  

COVID-19 restrictions were unable to dampen the spirits of the 15 conferees who made the pledge for our country as part of commemorations. 

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said while ceremony proceedings had to be slightly altered this time around, it remained a momentous occasion for all in attendance.  

“One of the absolute highlights of my role as Mayor is having the privilege of representing our country and being a part of this special moment in the lives of so many wonderful people choosing to call Australia home,” Cr McVeigh said.  

“As part of Monday’s ceremony, we welcomed people from seven different countries including India, Philippines, New Zealand, Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and United Kingdom.   

“It’s so exciting to officially welcome people from all different cultures who have chosen our region to call home. 

“At a time when large parts of the country are unable to meet and celebrate, we are very thankful we were able to come together safely under the restrictions.” 

Chinchilla resident Rose Borck and her daughter Althea were officially named Australian citizens as part of proceedings and said it was a very exciting moment for their family.   

“It is very important to be an Australian for me and my family, and we are very pleased and proud to be in this country and happy together,” Ms Borck said.  

The event was the second Citizenship Ceremony held in the Western Downs this year.
