he Western Downs will come alive with the festive spirit this holiday season, with a variety of family friendly community events and activities jingling their way around the region.

Across the Western Downs local community groups are set to spread Christmas joy by hosting family favourite events, including Community Carols, Christmas Carnivals, and festive tree lighting ceremonies. The ever-popular 'Christmas where the Gum Trees Grow' competition will also be returning to bring the holiday cheer to region's rural properties.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said the holiday season was a time for communities to unite with friends and family, partake in the celebrations, and enjoy being a part of the region's active, vibrant, and closely-knit communities.

"During the festive season we take time to look back on our accomplishments and enjoy meaningful moments with our loved ones. In 2023, we've prepared an impressive array of festive events throughout the region to share with friends and family." Cr McVeigh said.

"The Chinchilla Community Christmas Celebration is back through collaboration between Council, the Chinchilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Lions Club of Chinchilla with something for everyone to enjoy including the premier Mayoral Christmas Carols.

“Excitingly, Council will also be hosting the Dalby Christmas Tree Lighting in the new Mary's Place precinct for the very first time. It's going to be amazing to see that space lit up, so be sure not to miss it.

"Our Libraries will be joining in on the festive fun by organising a variety of Christmas-themed workshops and craft sessions, so I encourage residents to reach out to their nearest Library to find out more about what's planned for their local branch.

"As we all know, on the Western Downs 'it's the people that make it'. It's been a tough few month for our region, but  witnessing the resilience and unity of our local residents and community groups as they organise remarkable Christmas festivities highlights the community pride that we share and the wonderful people that make our region so welcoming and inclusive.

"All of the details for this year's holiday events can be found on Council's website, so I recommend that residents keep an eye out there for full list of all the festivities.

"Council will be updating information on the Council website as it's shared by the community, so I strongly advise any community groups wanting to spread festive cheer this year to get in touch with Council if they require support in promoting their events or projects.
