Western Downs Regional Council has completed a $1.75 million upgrade of Bullock Head Road at Tara, to improve flood immunity and strengthen the transport network.

The project has delivered a nine-kilometre upgrade from gravel to bitumen, as well as new concrete protection on floodways and reinforced concrete culverts between Hoadleys Road to Southwood Road.

Council Spokesperson for Works and Technical Services Councillor George Moore said the upgrade would significantly-enhance this key connection route in the local transport network.

"Council invests in a safe, well-maintained road network, and this project has completed the 'missing link' of bitumen connecting Roaches Road and Southwood Road," Cr Moore said.

"Approximately 160,000 litres of bitumen product has been used to complete this road upgrade, which will ensure a stronger, sturdier roadway that is also more resilient to rain events.

"The completion of this upgrade will help to keep our economy moving by improving road conditions for primary producers who operate in the area."

Cr Moore said Council was delivering a mammoth road upgrade program this year, with several packages of works underway to repair or improve the road network.

"This project is part of our $21.9 million capital works program, which is delivering upgrades to roads, bridges, and footpaths across the Western Downs this year," he said.

"In addition, Council is currently completing one of Queensland's largest flood restoration program, with around $160 million worth of road repairs being completed following significant damage in 2021 and 2022.

"We have a huge job ahead of us, and I thank the community for its patience and support to deliver a safer and better-connected road network for the region."
