Local song writers to be celebrated by Groovin' from the Garage competition, back for a third year

After two fantastic years unearthing some of the region's best musical talent, the Groovin' from the Garage competition returns inviting locals to tap into their inner musician and submit an original song.

Following an overwhelmingly positive response in previous years, the popular Council initiative returns this year to provide local musical talents with a unique opportunity to write and showcase their own original music whilst also enjoying some friendly competition.

Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said Groovin' from the Garage aims to highlight the region’s musical stars whilst also generating pride in our communities.

“Our incredibly talented artists and songwriters are at the heart of our active, vibrant communities. This competition provides a platform to express and enjoy the creativity of our region's musical stars” Cr Maguire said.

“Like previous years, local artists are being asked to record and submit a video of themselves performing an original, unpublished song from home.

"This year three finalists will be selected by Council to have their song showcased on Council's 'Western Downs Invites You' Facebook platform to be enjoyed by the whole community. The competition winner will receive a fantastic prize - a professionally created and produced Artist Spotlight video profile to amp up the superstar factor!

“The 'digital stage' is the perfect platform for sharing our finalists' musical talents with the entire Western Downs community. The winner's Artist Spotlight profile is also an amazing opportunity to have one's talents professionally captured. Of course, Groovin' from the Garage also gives our entrants the opportunity for a bit of friendly competition with likeminded local artists.

“Here in the Western Downs, ‘it’s the people that make it’ so opportunities like this are so important to support our fantastic local musical arts community and showcase our talented residents and their contributions to the vibrancy of the Western Downs.”

2021 Groovin’ from the garage winner Tanya Mudie said that the competition was a fantastic initiative to support local artists and give them a voice to share their passion with the region.

“I entered the competition last year with a song called "Hand of a Hero" which was inspired by the amazing work of our local SES volunteers and the impact that they have for our community” Ms Mudie said.

“I encourage all the local singers and songwriters to have a go. We have so many great artists in our region, it would be great to shine the spotlight on you all”.

The competition will be open from Friday 4 November 2022 to Saturday 31 December. Finalists and competition winner will be announced in January 2023. Residents are encouraged to like and follow ‘Western Downs Invites You’ on Facebook to see the performances of our finalists and keep up to date with competition announcements.
