Under the shade of a beautiful pepperina tree in the heart of Jandowae, a town rich in history and culture, the Western Downs community came together to welcome the region's 29 newest Australians.

Mayor Paul McVeigh conferred citizenship at last week's ceremony, and said he was incredibly proud to have the opportunity to welcome new friends and neighbours to the Western Downs on behalf of the Commonwealth.

"It's the people that make it in the Western Downs, and that means those who have lived here for a long time as well as those who have chosen this wonderful region to be their new home," Cr McVeigh said.

"Welcoming people from a host of nations and cultural backgrounds is really exciting because cultural diversity in our towns combines to make our communities so recognisably vibrant and welcoming.

"The weather couldn't have been more perfect, which was fitting for such an important and special occasion. Hosting the ceremony in Jandowae's beautiful central park with many members of our community was so special for our new citizens.

"I warmly welcome all of the conferees and I hope that they discover and enjoy the warmth and welcoming spirit that this incredible community offers."

Dalby resident and new Australian Citizen, Bittu Cherian said she felt very privileged and proud to become an Australian Citizen after what had been a long journey.

"I love the people and the community I've met in the two years plus I've been living in Dalby, and it's such a privilege to be in this country," said Ms Cherian.

"I've always felt welcome, and there's always a smile on everyone's face and people greet each other. So you'll never feel like you're not home when you feel the warmth and welcome everywhere you go.

Sam Antony celebrated his newly conferred Australian Citizenship in Jandowae and reflected that he had felt very welcome in his time in Dalby.

"Australia has been my home for a while, but for me, I can officially call Australia home now, which is massive," said Mr Antony.

The newest Australian citizens in our region come from the United Kingdom, Romania, Philippines, Thailand, and India.

The ceremony was held on Wednesday 26th October and was the third citizenship ceremony of the year following ceremonies on Australia Day in January and at the Dalby Delicious and DeLightful Festival in August. The Western Downs has welcomed a total of 126 new Australian Citizens to the region this year.
