The Western Downs is set to come alive with the festive spirit this holiday season, with a range of community events and activities on offer for the whole family.

Western Downs Regional Council is partnering with community groups right across the region to bring some festive cheer to the local community, with community carols, street parties, and Christmas tree light ups just some of the events on offer.  Following its popularity, Council will again host a rural property entrance Christmas decoration competition this year.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said it was important for families to come together, share in the festivities and be a part of the region’s inclusive and connected community.

“This is the time of year when we get the opportunity to reflect on our achievements and spend quality time with our family and friends, and in 2021 we have an incredible line up of Christmas activities planned across the region,” Cr McVeigh said.

“Council is hosting the Chinchilla Community Christmas Carols in conjunction with the Chinchilla Lions Christmas Light Show light-up event, with plenty of entertainment planned. We’re also hosting the Dalby Christmas Tree Light Up event at Thomas Jack Park, which is set to be an exciting event for people of all ages.

“Our Libraries will share in the festive fun, with a range of Christmas-themed workshops and craft sessions planned, and I encourage residents to get in touch with their local Library to find out more.

“We’ve also partnered with local schools to be a part of our Ready Set Glow decorating competition, and we’re hosting a competition for our rural residents encouraging families to dress up their property entrance or farming machinery for a chance to win some great prizes.”

Cr McVeigh said Council was also supporting several community-driven Christmas events across the Western Downs.

“It’s fantastic to see local towns coming together to host some incredible Christmas events, which really showcases the people that make our region so unique and inclusive for all,” he said.

“Our local town favourites are returning this year, and I encourage residents to visit Council’s website for a full rundown of what’s on offer.

“Council will be updating information as it comes through from the community, and I encourage groups to reach out to Council for any assistance in promoting their events or initiatives.”
