Western Downs Regional Council continues to support local community groups and organisations to deliver exciting, innovative programs around the region with the announcement of the latest round of grants and funding recipients.

Recipients of funding through the Local Events, Destination Events, Community Activation and Community Projects Programs were recently announced, with ten local organisations successful in receiving financial support to deliver their initiatives.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development, Councillor Kaye Maguire, said community organisations were the backbone of our active, vibrant communities and Council was proud to support their initiatives through the grants and funding programs.

"We all know that on the Western Downs, 'it's the people that make it'. Our community groups play a huge role building social connection and we are so proud to be able to provide them with support so they can continue to thrive, innovate, and continue their important work throughout our region," Cr Maguire said.

"Almost $60,000 has been allocated as part of the current grants round to support some fabulous initiatives, including the Bell, Dalby, Jandowae and Tara Shows, community Christmas celebrations in Chinchilla and Tara, the Australian Polocrosse Nationals, and more."

Chinchilla Polocrosse Club member and Nationals sub-committee member Kelly Mullins said receiving funding as part of the Destination Events Program for the Australian Polocrosse Nationals, which is to be held in Chinchilla in June 2024, has been a huge support to the club.

"The Australian Polocrosse Nationals have never been held in Chinchilla before, so it's very exciting not just for our club but also for our entire community. We're expecting thousands of participants and spectators from all around the country to make their way to the Western Downs, so receiving this grant money and knowing that we have the support of Council has been such a huge help to us," Ms Mullins said.

"The sport of polocrosse was actually developed in Australia, and we are currently the top polocrosse nation in the world! We are extremely excited to be hosting this event, and receiving this funding from Council has given us the opportunity to do things that will make the event even better! We're hoping that the whole town, and region, will get behind it and benefit from it."
