Communities all around the Western Downs are encouraged to join together and attend one of the many services being held across the region to honour the men and women who have fought and sacrificed for our nation’s freedom this ANZAC Day.

Local RSL sub-branches and community groups, in partnership with Western Downs Regional Council, are delivering services across the region on Tuesday 25 April as part of this year’s ANZAC Day commemorations.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Cr Paul McVeigh said it was important to recognise and honour the sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand service people during both war and peacetime and invited all residents and visitors to come together and pay their respects at any of the Anzac Day services happening across our region.

“Anzac Day is a very important day for our nation when we take the time to pay our respects and show our appreciation for the service and sacrifice of our fellow Australians,” Cr McVeigh said.

“The saying ‘it’s the people that make it’ is never more poignant than on Anzac Day when we commemorate and contemplate the legacy of those who bravely served, and particularly of those who never returned home.

"It has often been said that Australia is the ‘lucky country’, and indeed we are very fortunate to enjoy the freedom and lifestyle that we do today. On days like Anzac Day, it is important that we come together as a community to reflect on the sacrifices that were made – and which continue to be made – for this wonderful, free land that we all adore.

“Council is proud to support the local RSL sub-branches and community groups who generously give their time to plan and coordinate the many services that are held all over the Western Downs this year and every year.

“Thirteen commemoration services will be taking place across the Western Downs so that all residents have the opportunity to attend, pay their respects, and lay a wreath if they wish to do so.”
