Council acknowledges that our region is built by amazing people who are deserving of recognition for their efforts.

Every year Council asks the community who they think has made a notable contribution in the form of nominations for our annual Australia Day Awards.

These awards are incredibly special as they allow us to shine a light on those who contribute to the community of the Western Downs and help make our region the place we love. 

We are proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Australia Day Awards. 

2026 Australia Day Award Recipients

Local Creative Arts Award

2026 Local Creative Arts Award Winners

Awarded to one nominee in each district (Chinchilla, Dalby, Jandowae, Miles, Tara or Wandoan) who:

  • Has provided outstanding contributions bringing long or short-term benefits to the arts and/or cultural community.
  • Shows vision, leadership, innovation or creativity in the arts and/or cultural community.  

Chinchilla & District: Helen Dennis

Helen Dennis has made an extraordinary contribution to the arts in Chinchilla, both as an accomplished artist and a passionate volunteer. Since retiring from teaching, Helen has developed her own distinctive artistic style, exhibiting widely and earning recognition through awards and regional gallery showcases. As President and Exhibition Coordinator at Lapunyah Art Gallery, Helen has transformed the space into a vibrant, inclusive hub for creativity, introducing workshops, youth art programs, collaborative exhibitions, and community events. Her vision and dedication have nurtured emerging artists, enriched cultural life, and ensured that art remains a vital part of the Western Downs community.

 

 

Dalby & District: Trish Morrin

Trish has made an exceptional contribution to Dalby’s arts and cultural life through a decade of dedicated volunteering. As Treasurer of Gallery107@Dalby, she introduced systems that strengthened operations and helped establish the popular Artisan Markets, attracting new audiences to the gallery. Trish also shares her love of music as part of Boulevard Duet, performing at aged-care facilities across the Western Downs and volunteering at community events. Her leadership, creativity, and generosity have enriched local arts organisations and brought joy to countless residents.

 

 

 

Jandowae & District: Annabelle Nelson

Annabelle has shared her musical talent with the community since the age of six, performing regularly at the local retirement village and honouring servicemen and women by playing The Last Post at Anzac Day services for the past four years. A gifted clarinettist and saxophonist, she has excelled in school, community, and university ensembles, earned Eisteddfod awards, and volunteered to mentor younger musicians. Now studying a Bachelor of Music and Education, Annabelle’s passion for music and teaching continues to inspire others and enrich the cultural life of our region.

 

 

 

Miles & District: Katelann Grealy

Katelann has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in the Western Downs, inspiring creativity and community spirit. Through her original four-song EP, funded by a council grant, she wrote and co-produced music and videos that celebrate our region’s culture and diversity. Her video Australia My Home featured local children and highlighted First Nations heritage. Katelann also delivered concerts and children’s workshops, giving young people the chance to learn, perform, and even join her on stage during her tour. Her passion, leadership, and commitment to creating opportunities for others have made her a role model and a driving force in our local arts community.

 

Local Sports Award

  • Is an outstanding sportsperson with a noteworthy record of achievement in sport. 
  • Is a role model that people can aspire to.

Chinchilla & District (Junior): Grace Radke

At just 16 years old, Grace Radke has become one of Australia’s most promising softball players. A talented pitcher, pivot, and heavy batter, Grace has represented Queensland and Australia at multiple national championships, earning titles such as Player of the Grand Final and a coveted spot in the All-Star Tournament Team. She is a member of the U16 Australian Softball Team and the Queensland School Sports U19 Team, competing at the highest level while remaining a humble and supportive teammate. Grace’s dedication, sportsmanship, and passion for the game make her an outstanding role model for young athletes.

 

 

 

Dalby & District (Junior): Megan Russell

Megan Russell has achieved extraordinary success in endurance sports, transitioning from triathlon - where she claimed the Queensland State Series title for 16–17-year girls - to road cycling, where her rise has been meteoric. Megan is now a dual Queensland Champion and winner of the prestigious Canberra Junior Tour, cementing her reputation as one of Australia’s brightest cycling talents. Her professionalism, determination, and willingness to mentor younger athletes make her not only a champion on the bike but also an inspiring role model for the sporting community.

 

 

 

Jandowae & District (Junior): Adley May

At just 12 years old, Adley May has already made her mark as an outstanding equestrian competitor and all-round athlete. Her dedication to horse riding has taken her from local gymkhanas to the State and National Interschool Equestrian Championships, where she achieved top placings in dressage and show horse events. Adley also excels in track and field, gymnastics, and barrel racing, proving her versatility and determination. Known for her resilience and sportsmanship, Adley is a positive role model who inspires others with her hard work, humility, and passion for her sport.

 

 

 

Miles & District (Junior): Summa Salisbury

At just 14 years old, Summa Salisbury has proven herself as a rising star in weightlifting and beyond. Training with Saints Weightlifting at Murilla Fitness Centre, Summa’s hard work and determination earned her selection in the Queensland team for the Australian Under 15/Youth Championships, where she claimed gold in her category with a personal-best total of 90 kilograms. Her strength and confidence also shine in other sports: she represented Southwest in netball and was named Most Valuable Player at the Queensland School Girls Carnival. Summa’s dedication, positivity, and sportsmanship make her an inspiring role model for young athletes.

 

 

 

Tara & District (Junior): Briella Borchardt

Eight‑year‑old Briella is an exceptionally talented young horsewoman who proudly represents Dalby Pony Club and Zone 4. Beginning competition at just two, she is now the Queensland State Champion for Sporting after an outstanding performance at the 2025 State Championships in Kilcoy, where she also earned multiple top placings and selection for the State Team. Known for her dedication, resilience and remarkable sportsmanship, Briella shows maturity beyond her years in the way she cares for and trains her horses. Her positivity, hard work and passion for equestrian sport make her a truly deserving winner of the Tara & District Sports Award.

 

 

Wandoan & District (Junior): Will Bowling

Will Bowling is an outstanding young polocrosse player whose talent and dedication have earned him state and national recognition. After five years playing for Wandoan, Will was selected for the Queensland Junior Boys team to compete at the prestigious Barastoc Interstate Series in Warwick and the Australian National Championships in Darwin in 2026. His recent accolades include Most Improved Junior Player for Wandoan Polocrosse Club, Best and Fairest Junior at the Eidsvold Carnival, and Best Australian Stock Horse at the Wandoan Carnival with his homebred mare, Susie. Will’s sportsmanship and team spirit make him a true ambassador for his sport.

 

Local Volunteer of the Year Award

Chinchilla & District: Zoe McLaren

Zoe McLaren is the driving force behind the success of the Chinchilla Squash Club. As president, coach, and mentor, Zoe gives countless hours to support players of all ages, particularly juniors, helping them build skills, confidence, and a love for the game. She organises weekly draws and tournaments, maintains facilities, secures grants, and even takes care of practical tasks like mowing and recycling. Zoe’s leadership and enthusiasm have transformed the club into a welcoming, vibrant community hub. Her tireless efforts and passion for volunteering make her an outstanding role model and a true asset to Chinchilla.

 

 

 

Dalby & District: Sharlene Smith

Sharlene Smith is an exceptional volunteer whose generosity and commitment have enriched countless community initiatives. For over two decades, Sharlene has given her time to organisations including the Myall Youth and Community Network Centre, Gallery 107, Goondir, and the Welcoming Community Committee. She has led art workshops, supported cultural projects, and played a key role in events like Delicious & Delightful. Through programs such as Big Buddy and Girls With a Purpose, Sharlene has mentored Indigenous youth and inspired others with her leadership. Her creativity, kindness, and tireless service make her a true pillar of the Dalby community.

 

 

Jandowae & District: Wayne McGuire

Wayne McGuire is a long-serving volunteer whose dedication has strengthened both Ningana Aged Care in Dalby and the wider Bell community. At Ningana, Wayne devoted countless hours to administration, financial oversight, and compliance, helping maintain financial stability and full accreditation during times of significant change. His leadership supported the expansion of the facility and improved governance systems. Beyond Ningana, Wayne has contributed to the Bell Recreation Reserve Committee, the Bell Show, and the Bell Race Club, often taking on key roles such as treasurer and secretary. His tireless efforts have left a lasting legacy of care, progress, and community spirit.

 

 

Tara & District: Jennifer Hallinan

Jennifer Hallinan is the heart of community spirit in Tara. A lifelong local, Jennifer has dedicated decades to volunteering across countless organisations, including the Tara State School P&C, Brownies and Girl Guides, Tara Swimming Club, Tara Rugby League, and the Tara Show Society. She has served as President of the Tara Lioness Club for many years and continues to lead initiatives that support local families and charities. Jennifer also gives her time to the Tara RSL Sub-Branch and the Local Ambulance Committee, helping veterans and ensuring vital services remain strong. Her selflessness and commitment have left an enduring mark on the Tara community.

 

 

Miles & District: Gayle Guymer

Gayle Guymer has been a passionate and reliable contributor to the Miles community for more than 30 years. Since retiring from teaching, Gayle has devoted her time to countless local initiatives, including Park Run, the Miles Bowls Club, the Miles Regional Arts Council, and the Back to the Bush Festival. She also leads the annual Pink Up Miles campaign, raising awareness and funds for the McGrath Foundation. Known for her energy, creativity, and willingness to help wherever needed, Gayle has strengthened community spirit and created lasting positive change, making her a truly deserving recipient of this award.

 

 

 

Wandoan & District: Patrick Devlin

Patrick Devlin is a dedicated volunteer whose leadership and generosity have left a lasting mark on the Wandoan community. For many years, Patrick has organised Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services, ensuring these important commemorations are meaningful and respectful. He played a key role in establishing the Wandoan Avenue of Honour, a permanent tribute to our veterans, and continues to support local events through fundraising and donations. As President of the Wandoan Housing Association for nearly two decades, Patrick has overseen major achievements, including securing land and purchasing housing units to provide affordable accommodation for pensioners. His vision and commitment exemplify true community spirit.

 

Local Community Organisation Achievement Award

Dalby & District: Dalby Men's Shed Association

The Dalby Men’s Shed is a cornerstone of community spirit, providing practical support and social connection across the region. Their members volunteer countless hours to create, repair, and build items for local schools, day care centres, and community groups, bringing joy through projects like handcrafted wooden toys. Beyond their craftsmanship, the Men’s Shed champions important causes, hosting fundraisers and awareness events such as Movember for men’s mental health. Their dedication, teamwork, and generosity have made the Dalby Men’s Shed a vital part of the community and a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and care.

 

 

Jandowae & District: Jinghi Valley QCWA

The Jinghi Valley QCWA is a shining example of community spirit, friendship, and service. This dedicated group of women enriches lives through initiatives that support mental health, education, and wellbeing. From hosting weekly “Cuppa and Chat” sessions to alleviate isolation, to catering local events and fundraising for vital causes, their impact is far-reaching. They donate hygiene packs to schools, knit for charities, create birthing kits for developing countries, and support emergency services during local crises. Through creativity, compassion, and tireless volunteerism, the Jinghi Valley QCWA has strengthened community connections and brought lasting benefits to Jandowae and beyond.

 

 

Miles & District: Miles District Ladies Netball

Miles District Ladies Netball brings people together through sport, creating a safe, welcoming environment for fun, fitness, and friendship. Running two seasons each year (ladies-only and mixed), the association attracts players from Miles and surrounding areas, fostering inclusion and community connection. Their commitment to affordability ensures everyone can participate, while initiatives like Pink Night raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. Operated entirely by passionate volunteers, the club organises games, maintains facilities, and supports local businesses through gift voucher awards. Miles District Ladies Netball is more than a sporting group, it's a vibrant hub that strengthens community ties.

 

 

Tara & District: Inglestone QCWA

For 74 years, the Inglestone QCWA was a cornerstone of community life, providing connection, support, and advocacy in one of the most isolated parts of the Western Downs. From hosting balls, plays, and craft days to lobbying for mobile towers and TV reception, the branch worked tirelessly to improve life for local families. They championed education through bursaries and school programs, supported charities with birthing kits and knitted goods, and raised significant funds for cancer research. Their efforts created lasting facilities, services, and friendships, leaving a remarkable legacy of resilience, generosity, and community spirit.

 

 

Wandoan & District: Juandah Heritage Society

The Juandah Heritage Society plays a vital role in preserving Wandoan’s rich history and sharing it with future generations. Based at the Juandah Historical Site, the Society maintains heritage buildings and artefacts, curates engaging displays, and hosts events such as Queensland Day Celebrations and Australia Day Awards breakfasts. Their work fosters community pride, strengthens cultural identity, and attracts visitors to the region. Powered by passionate volunteers, the Society combines education and entertainment to keep local stories alive, ensuring Wandoan’s pioneering spirit remains a source of inspiration and recognition for the Western Downs.

Regional Citizen of the Year

Awarded to one nominee in the region who:

  • Has been an inspiration/positive role model for their peers/ community/region.
  • Has shown a significant and outstanding contribution to the community.
  • Has demonstrated a high level of personal, academic or professional achievement with demonstrated benefits for others.
  • Shows vision, leadership, innovation or creativity.

Greg Zillman is a true pillar of the Wandoan community, whose leadership and vision have created lasting benefits for generations to come. As president of the P&C for nine years, Greg has overseen major projects, including the transformative Greener Ovals initiative, which turned drought-affected grounds into a thriving community hub through collaboration with volunteers, businesses, and council. His service extends far beyond the school. Greg is president of the local RSL, vice-president of the Housing Association, a Fire Warden Officer, and an active supporter of youth sport through coaching and refereeing. A proud veteran, Greg honours our servicemen and women by playing the bugle at Anzac and Remembrance Day services. His commitment to continuous learning, demonstrated through his participation in the Australian Rural Leadership Program, and his ability to unite people around a shared vision make him an inspiring role model. Greg’s tireless efforts, generosity, and dedication exemplify the very best of community spirit, making him a truly deserving recipient of Citizen of the Year. 

Regional Young Citizen of the Year

Awarded to one nominee in the region who:

  • Has demonstrated leadership, innovation or creativity.
  • Has shown outstanding achievement in their chosen field; e.g. academic, sporting, cultural, environment or civic responsibility.
  • Is a role model that other young people can aspire to.
  • Has shown a significant contribution to the community.

Sophie Scutchings is an exceptional young leader whose achievements in 2025 have inspired her community and beyond. As school captain of Chinchilla State High School, Sophie led with integrity, humility, and a tireless commitment to her peers. Her leadership extended beyond the school gates; she won the Lions Youth of the Year and the Anzac Day Writing Competition, demonstrating academic excellence and civic pride. Sophie also made national headlines by breaking the Australian record for the most take-offs and landings in a single day, completing 150 flights and raising over $15,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This incredible feat came after earning her pilot’s licence while still in school, a testament to her determination, courage, and vision. Sophie’s achievements in aviation, her volunteerism at community events, and her unwavering character make her a role model for young people everywhere. She has shown that with passion and perseverance, the sky truly is the limit. 

Regional Creative Arts Award

The Regional Creative Arts Award recognises the person or group showing outstanding achievement in the cultural community and will be selected from the successful nominees of the Local Creative Arts Award.
