Western Downs’ unemployment rate lowest in Queensland

23 November 2015

The Western Downs’ unemployment rate has ranked the lowest in Queensland and one of the lowest in Australia over the past year at 3.8%.

  • The Western Downs is at the heart of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Darling Downs-Maranoa Region, which in a recent report released by the Commonwealth Bank averaged an unemployment rate of 3.8% over the past year;
  • The Darling Downs-Maranoa Region is the only Queensland region ranked in the top 15 regions with the lowest unemployment rates;
  • This indicates that our regional economy is very strong, with our communities and businesses continuing to buck the trend of rural decline.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Ray Brown said this data from ABS and the Commonwealth Bank demonstrates that the Western Downs is leading the state as one of the best regions to invest in.

“With Western Downs’ unemployment rate the lowest in Queensland over the past 12 months, this data shows that our regional economy is resilient and diverse,” he said.

“With incredibly low unemployment, the Western Downs continues to buck the trend of rural decline, highlighting the favourable prospects and opportunities for business investment in our region.

“The strength of our regional economy and our bright future for business investment and growth can be seen throughout the region, our communities and businesses should take advantage of our local economy by looking to bring investment opportunities to our Western Downs.”
