Western Downs Mayor is bursting with excitement for the Chinchilla Melon Festival

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh and Chinchilla Melon Festival Committee Vice-President Darryl O’Leary were seen getting into the melon spirit on the main streets of Chinchilla last week.

With just over a week to go until the Chinchilla Melon Festival kicks off, the Western Downs is well and truly excited for some sweet, juicy fun.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh is very excited so he’s getting into the Melon spirit early.

“It’s almost time for the juiciest event on our calendar and it’s going to be even bigger and better for its 25th year with the addition of our amazing Big Melon,” he said.

“I’m so excited for the Festival, I’m going to be practicing my seed-spitting and melon-smashing skills early — so hopefully I’ll be an expert by next weekend!

“The Melon Festival is such a unique event for our residents and visitors to the region and I know everyone will have a great time.”

Council also expects to finish installing lights and picnic tables at the Big Melon on Friday to guarantee the giant slice is a great photo opportunity for locals and visitors at any time of the day or night.

“The Big Melon after dark is just spectacular — it looks even bigger lit up!” Councillor McVeigh said.

Chinchilla Melon Festival Committee President Doug McNally said he was excited about the upcoming Festival to showcase the Chinchilla district.

“The Big Melon will bring lots of people to Chinchilla to see the new attraction — not only for the Festival but throughout the year, which will lift tourism in the Western Downs.

“The committee is looking forward to the lighting being turned on at the Big Melon which will showcase Chinchilla’s latest attraction both day and night.”

The 2019 Chinchilla Melon Fest will run from 14-17 February.
