Western Downs Housing Trust to Open its New Miles Affordable Housing Development HomeNews2015August 2015Western Downs Housing Trust to Open its New Miles Affordable Housing Development 26 August 2015 The Western Downs Housing Trust is to open Stage 1 of its new affordable housing development at Ross Street, Miles, at a public ceremony on Friday 18 September 2015 at 2.30pm. The development consists of 1 one bedroom, 3 two bedroom and 4 three bedroom, two storey town house style units and are now available for occupation by new tenants. Trust Chairman, and Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Ray Brown said the opening will be preceded by a lunch and open inspection of the units from 1pm with the official opening at 2.30pm “I invite everyone to come along and see these magnificent units and what can be achieved in affordable housing,” he said. “We have built a number of one and two bedroom units rather than just the conventional three and four bedroom duplexes/houses, as these are what are lacking in the town at present. “This is the Trust’s third affordable housing development, and is bigger and quite different to its first two developments at Wandoan and Chinchilla. This time we sought to raise the bar even higher as to what affordable housing can achieve. “I think everyone will be impressed with this development. Once again, the Trust has put a lot of effort in liaising with the community as to its size, design and use of materials. The colour scheme is fantastic and the development fits in perfectly with its surrounding neighbours, and feedback to date has all been very positive.” The units will be rented to eligible low-to-moderate income workers, employed outside of the CSG/resource sector, who are suffering housing stress. Tenants will enjoy a rental discount equal to at least 25 per cent of the market rent. Mayor Brown acknowledges that whilst there is presently an over-supply of rental housing in the town, “this development will help keep rentals low and help to ease housing stress in the town now and in the future.” The development, which has been completed on schedule and on budget, cost $2.5 million to construct and was financed entirely by the Trust from a donation by QGC Limited. Stage 2, which will be of a similar size, is on hold pending developments in the rental housing sector in the town.
