Shyann wins Trainee of the Year

14 August 2018

SunPork Farms Operations Manager Rob Martyn and Western Downs Regional Council employee Shyann Doyle were thrilled to be recognised at the Regional Queensland Training Awards last week.

Dalby girl Shyann Doyle has her sights set on the State title, after winning the 2018 Darling Downs South West Regional Trainee of the Year award earlier this month.

More than 900 nominations for Queensland Training Awards were received across the state, with three finalists from each Regional category chosen to attend the awards evening, held at the Oakey Cultural Centre.

Shyann started her traineeship with Western Downs Regional Council in early 2017 and is now a permanent staff member working within the Communities Department.

Shyann is thankful for the support of her workplace and family since placing her nomination.

“Staff members from Western Downs Regional Council attended the awards evening along with my family, so I felt really supported in this journey,” she said.

“My dad was jumping out of his seat with joy when my name was announced!

“This awards process has given me a lot more confidence, as well as realising what I am capable of in terms of my professional development.”

Western Downs business SunPork Farms Tong Park also took out the award for Medium Employer of the Year, for the second year in a row.

Operations Manager Rob Martyn says that it’s been a boost of confidence for his team to receive recognition from others outside the business.

“Our specialised training is one aspect that sets us apart from other businesses, and this award confirms that the extra time and investment that we make, is worthwhile,” he said.

“Over a number of years, we have developed and refined our training model so that each member is trained in site-specific tasks, tailored to a range of staff needs.

“It would be amazing to take out the State Award this year.”

The Queensland Training Awards State Gala Dinner will be held in Brisbane on September 8.
