Residents encouraged to nominate a deserving local this Australia Day

Nominations for the region’s 2023 Australia Day Awards are now open, and residents are urged to recognise ‘the people that make it’ by nominating an outstanding local person, community group or organisation for recognition.

The Western Downs’ annual Australia Day Awards acknowledge the achievements of residents across a number of areas, including volunteering, arts and culture, and sport.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said that the Australia Day Awards are the perfect opportunity to thank those who may go unnoticed or not realise how important their contributions are.

“At the heart of our vibrant communities are people doing incredible things,” Mayor McVeigh said.

“We know on the Western Downs ‘ it’s the people that make it’, so I’m sure everyone can think of someone extraordinary and deserving of nominating for our region’s top honour.

“Now is the time to make sure the special people in our community know how valued they are – and how important the work that they do is to the Western Downs.”

2022 Citizen of the Year Robyn Haig said it’s important to acknowledge those special people in our region.

“I was very humbled to receive Citizen of the Year. With a region full of people who are such hard and amazing workers, it was really nice to have that single recognition,” she said,

“I would encourage the community to nominate those they see deserving recognition. As a community we need to acknowledge those doing amazing things.

“Everyone should think to nominate someone. I think there are lots of people out there who have gone without receiving the recognition they deserve.
