Operation Rescue packed a mighty punch

9 June 2015

Our Western Downs National Youth Week Operation Rescue events have been labelled ‘Operation Success’ with over 600 of the region’s young people participating in action-packed emergency service-themed events across the Western Downs.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development and Health Services Councillor Carolyn Tillman said it was the inspiring efforts of our youth embracing the week’s theme ‘It starts with us’ that made the first region-wide Operation Rescue a success.

“Throughout the week-long event young people aged 12 to 16 from Chinchilla, Dalby, Jandowae, Miles, Tara and Wandoan embraced participating in the emergency service challenges, enjoyed a free outdoor movie, and got to see a fire simulation, with winners of the team challenges taking home great prize packs,” she said.

“Participants in the events showed great teamwork and problem solving skills to navigate their way around the different challenges.

“It was wonderful to see teammates helping each other to get through the emergency service-themed obstacle courses, laser skirmish, the rock climbing wall, and other equally challenging activities. They showed excellent team building and leadership skills, which is an important learning experience for our young people.”

Cr Tillman said the week-long National Youth Week event would not have been possible without the support of the regional and local emergency service volunteers.

“Our sincere thanks must go to all the Ambulance, Fire Brigade, SES, Police and local community organisations that participated in all our events and made the activities so informative and fun for the children”, she said.
