Nominations for the 2017 Australia Day Awards now open

This year’s official Australia Day celebrations saw a record 2,100 people celebrate the outstanding achievements of our local heroes at ceremonies across the region. With recent events fresh in our minds, it’s never too early to acknowledge the dedication of a deserving individual in your community by nominating them for the 2017 Australia Day Awards.

  • If you know of a resident, organisation or event of the Western Downs Regional Council area who contribute significantly to our communities, then nominate them for an Australia Day Award;
  • Residents can submit nominations for the following categories: Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year; Junior Cultural Award; Senior Cultural Award; Junior Sports Award; Senior Sports Award; Sports Administrator / Coach / Official Award; and Community Project / Event of the Year Award;
  • The Australia Day Awards are your chance to say ‘thanks’ and acknowledge the exceptional achievements and actions of the people who inspire you.

Mayor Ray Brown said the support from the community at this year’s Australia Day events was phenomenal and highlighted the strong ‘Aussie Spirit’ within our communities.

“There are so many exceptional and passionate individuals and community groups doing great things throughout our region whose achievements often go unnoticed,” he said.

“If hearing about the inspirational achievements of our 2016 Australia Day Award winners made you think of other worthy people within our community, I encourage you to take the time and submit a nomination for that individual, group or event today.

“Nominating the people who inspire you the most for an Australia Day Award is a great way to recognise their outstanding contributions to our region.”

Nominations for the 2017 Australia Day Awards are open until 5pm Tuesday 29 November 2016. Nomination forms are available on Council’s website at or call 1300 COUNCIL.
