National Youth Week and Emergency Services join for action-packed week

15 May 2015

The Our Western Downs National Youth Week is on again from Tuesday 26 to Sunday 31 May, and youth across the Western Downs are being called upon to come together for an action-packed week full of fun and challenging activities which focus on this year’s theme ‘It starts with Us’.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development and Health Councillor Carolyn Tillman said this year the organisers of the Our Western Downs National Youth Week have joined forces with our local emergency services to give the region’s young people an insight into the skills they use every day.

“Team challenges will be happening at centres throughout the region which will give participants an insight into the types of situations our local emergency services face,” she said.

“With the help and support of our local emergency services, this year’s National Youth Week is giving our region’s youth an opportunity to embrace this year’s theme ‘It starts with Us’ with free activities that showcase the skills of our volunteer organisations, the SES and Rural Fire Brigades.

“Youth aged from 12 to 25 will get to experience and learn about leadership skills, emergency services response and preparedness and the benefits of volunteering in their community.

“They will also have the opportunity to chat to local emergency services volunteers and professionals to get a real feel for what they do and how individuals can get involved and Get Ready.”

The Our Western Downs National Youth Week – Operation Rescue will run from Tuesday 26 to Sunday 31 May, with loads of free activities in each centre including an outdoor cinema, rock climbing, laser skirmish and, of course, the Operation Rescue Team Challenge.
