23 April 2015

The Wandoan Showgrounds has received more than $350,000 in upgrades as part of a multi-phased revitalisation project thanks to the joint efforts of QGC Pty Limited, the Wandoan Show Society, the Wandoan Showground Improvement Committee and Western Downs Regional Council, bringing the facility up to modern and safer standards.

Spokesperson for Community Facilities, Sport and Recreation Councillor Charlene Hall said the much-needed Stage One upgrade has significantly improved the reliability and safety of the grounds electrical and water infrastructure providing a more enjoyable recreational facility for the Wandoan community.

“The significant upgrades to the Wandoan Showgrounds are a great result for our residents and dedicated community groups who regularly use the facility,” she said.

“This joint initiative between QGC, the Wandoan Showground Improvement Committee, the Wandoan Show Society and Council has seen the delivery of improved power and water infrastructure as well as modernised the facilities to ensure the community and users of the grounds have a safer and more sustainable asset.

“Council wants to make sure our communities benefit in the long-term, one of the ways we are achieving this is by ensuring essential community infrastructure like Showgrounds are improved and maintained to a high standard.

“Council proudly supports the Wandoan Showgrounds revitalisation project and thanks the Wandoan Showground Improvement Committee and Wandoan Show Society for their dedication and hard work in making sure this much-loved community asset meets the needs of the community.”

President of the Wandoan Show Society Richard Golden said the project has been a rewarding experience for all those involved.

“The Wandoan Show Society and the Wandoan Showgrounds Improvement Committee have volunteered over 1,000 hours of their time to bring this project to life, and the skills of our in-house volunteer draftsperson, John Little, has been an invaluable asset to the revitalisation of the showgrounds,” he said.

“Occasionally, something truly spectacular comes along. For me, this project and all those involved has highlighted the remarkable community spirit we have here in Wandoan as this would not have been possible without the support of locals, community groups and QGC.”

The Wandoan Showgrounds Stage One upgrade was funded with $307,000 from the QGC Sustainable Communities program, $15,000 from the Wandoan Show Society, $20,000 from the Wandoan Showground Improvement Committee and $11,500 from Western Downs Regional Council.
