18 February 2015

Olympian Deb Acason will be the special guest speaker at this year’s inaugural ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year Awards’ gala dinner this Saturday 21 February, when the overall ‘Western Downs Regional Sports Star of the Year’ for 2014 will be announced.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Ray Brown said the awards program was designed to showcase and acknowledge the outstanding achievements of the region’s sporting representatives.

“Our region has a wealth of talented sports people in a wide range of disciplines and these awards are an opportunity to specifically recognise their achievements,” he said.

“With the generous support of Black Toyota, the inaugural ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year Awards’ program has consistently received stellar nominations from across the region with eight regional monthly winners being recognised who are now in the running for the regional title.

“The judging panel have had a very difficult task selecting the overall winner from an exceptional pool of talented sports people, and I strongly encourage the community to come along to the gala dinner to support the monthly winners.”

Mayor Brown said the Awards winners are sure to be inspired by guest presenter Deb Acason.

“Special guest speaker, and Miles local, Australian weightlifter Deb Acason, will help present the regional monthly winners as well as the regional title of ‘Western Downs Regional Sports Star of the Year’ for 2014. I’m sure the Awards winners will receive valuable insight and motivational messages about how they can work towards achieving their dreams,” he said.
