Art Collection

Over 500 diverse art works by local and internationally acclaimed artists comprise the collection of Western Downs Regional Council.

The collection is an amalgamation of various collections of the area’s former shire and town councils and art groups including:

  • Dalby Art Group
  • Dalby Potter’s Group
  • Dalby Town Council
  • Lapunyah Art Gallery (formerly Chinchilla White Gums Art Gallery)
  • Leichardt Gallery, Wandoan
  • Tara Regional Council

The individual collections were formed through a combination of donations, gifts from artists, purchases, and acquisitive art prizes, with significant periods of collection development occurring from the 1960's to the early 1980's.

Artists of note represented include local icon and founder of the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Hugh Sawrey, Archibald Prize winners Keith Looby, Guy Warren and Davida Allen, local botanical artist Grace Lithgow, William Bustard a noted painter, stained-glass artist and illustrator and internationally awarded potter Shunichi Inoue.

Management of the collection is governed by Council's Collection Management Policy, implemented in conjunction with software to enhance accessibility through documentation and research.

Held in trust for the community the art collection is an important cultural asset reflective of the region’s long involvement in the visual arts and Council’s commitment to creating and sustaining active vibrant communities.
