It’s official: Chinchilla has Australia’s newest attraction

14 November 2018

The Western Downs has Australia’s newest tourist attraction after The Big Melon was unveiled in Chinchilla today.

This announcement grows the Western Downs’ reputation as the tourism hotspot of regional Queensland, boasting fantastic events and attractions for the Australian tourism market.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said he could not wait to see residents and travellers having their picture taken with the new attraction.

Travel company Wotif ended weeks of speculation about where the ‘Next Big Thing’ would be located when they declared Chinchilla the winner of their recent competition.

Chinchilla’s Big Melon bid beat applications from across the country and three other finalists from Kingaroy and the New South Wales towns of Mittagong and Glen Innes.

Councillor McVeigh said The Big Melon would benefit local tourism and business.

“The Big Melon is going to be fantastic not only for the Chinchilla community but the whole Western Downs region,” he said.

“This is another drawcard for people to visit our region, shop at our local businesses and enjoy an authentic country experience.”

The Western Downs has become a great region for people travelling around Queensland due to its numerous family friendly events.

These tourist events combined with The Big Melon will boost the regional economy and allow local business to thrive.

Council Spokesperson for Economic Development Councillor Donna Ashurst said The Big Melon grew the region’s reputation for being a fantastic destination for visitors.

“We pride ourselves on putting on the best shows, hosting the best festivals and events and providing unforgettable memories for families and friends,” she said.

Wotif Managing Director, Daniel Finch said his company was excited to bring Chinchilla its newest attraction.

“As part of Wotif’s 18th birthday celebration, we are thrilled to be able to gift Chinchilla with The Big Melon,” he said.

“The enthusiasm and passion we saw for The Big Melon was outstanding and we’d like to thank each and every person who nominated, voted and supported the search for Australia’s ‘Next Big Thing’.

“We hope The Big Melon provides Chinchilla locals and travellers with fruitful experiences for years to come, and we encourage all Aussies to consider a road trip to the region.”
