Get involved to boost our tourism and economic future

21 December 2015

Just last month, Western Downs Regional Council and Australia Pacific LNG launched the Western Downs Tourism Investment Project, investing together in our region’s future.  This exciting joint project will see $1.4 million injected into expanding tourism activities, projects and initiatives over the next three years.

  • The Western Downs Tourism Investment Project is full steam ahead with ‘Open House’ Community Consultation meetings facilitated by EarthCheck Consulting, now completed throughout the region;
  • Over sixty potential projects were identified by community members, ranging from culturally significant projects to town beautification and entrance signage, with some projects having potential for development as regional initiatives;
  • A full listing of identified projects is available at Local Tourism Action Plan Reference Groups and members of the community are currently developing the Project Plans and Proposals that will inform six individual Tourism Action Plans for:
    • Chinchilla and District;
    • Dalby and District;
    • Jandowae and District;
    • Miles and District;
    • Tara and District; and
    • Wandoan and District;

  • Draft copies of the Local Tourism Action Plans will be available for public comment towards the end of January 2016.

Council Spokesperson for Economic Development and Tourism Councillor Tony Brame said the response to the ‘Open House’ Community Consultation meetings was extremely encouraging with the identification and development of Local Tourism Action Plans vital to enhance our tourism industry.

“The meetings were well attended by passionate community members looking for opportunities to increase the economic value of tourism in their districts,” he said.

“The success of this project lies in the representation from all sections of our communities.  Local representation is integral in ensuring that initiatives within each district enriches their unique character.

“Our region is so diverse providing a wide-range of tourism activities. I am extremely excited to see what this project will create in opportunities for our communities and our region.”
