Final wild dog baiting round for 2015 begins

28 September 2015

The final round of Western Downs Regional Council’s 2015 Wild Dog Baiting program will run from today, Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October.

Spokesperson for Environmental Health Councillor Greg Olm said this year Council was able to boost its efforts to curb roaming wild dog numbers through an additional baiting round and to expand on its Wild Dog Trapping Service thanks to funding from the Federal Government.

“With rural landholders across the region feeling the pressures and impacts of growing wild dog numbers, this year we received funding through the Australian Government’s Drought Assistance Feral Animal Management Program, which allowed Council to provide a more coordinated and consistent campaign aimed at counteracting the longer breeding cycles within the wild dog population,” he said.

“The ongoing efforts of Council and our landholders working together has achieved exceptional results, with some landholders participating in the program for the first time, and more rural landholders working together to combat wild dogs on their properties.

“Landholders across the region who are having problems managing the number of wild dogs on their properties are encouraged to get involved in this round, as the higher the participation rate, the more successful it will be.

“A coordinated approach across our rural areas, between landholders and Council’s dedicated Trappers, will help ensure that wild dogs find the baited areas, rather than avoiding them. So, I encourage you to speak with your neighbour before the next round, as by working together landholders and Council can limit the impacts of wild dogs on wildlife, the environment, and farmers’ livelihoods.”

The final wild dog baiting round for 2015 is scheduled for Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October.
