Environmentally friendly new Waste Facility for Meandarra

Western Downs Regional Council is continuing its investment in delivering essential waste and recycling infrastructure as part of its ongoing Towards a Waste Wise Western Downs Strategy, announcing a new Waste and Recycling Facility for Meandarra in the 2017/18 Budget.

  • The new Meandarra Waste and Recycling Facility will be built to contemporary standards in sustainable waste management;
  • Council has committed $269,000 in this year’s Budget to provide a safe, all weather, new facility to replace the existing Meandarra Landfill which will soon reach full capacity;
  • The new facility is expected to receive up to 500 tonnes of waste per year;
  • Over the past 7 years Council has taken a staged approach to upgrading waste infrastructure and services across the region, with Meandarra joining upgraded facilities in Chinchilla, Condamine, Dalby, Kaimkillenbun, Kogan and Miles.

Council Spokesperson for Planning and Environment Councillor Andrew Smith said a key pillar of Council’s ongoing Towards a Waste Wise Western Downs Strategy is ensuring our communities manage their waste sustainably well into the future.

“On average the Western Downs produces 30,000 tonnes of waste per year, which either goes directly into landfill or is processed at one of Council’s Waste and Recycling Centres,” he said.

“By strategically replacing our old out-dated and unsafe rubbish tips with modern facilities, we’re providing our communities with cleaner, greener, value for money waste management services.

“The new Meandarra Waste and Recycling Centre will tick all the boxes when it comes to environment suitability, cost effectiveness, and modern industry standards.

“Unlike the old Meandarra Landfill, this new facility will provide a safe, controlled space where residents can dispose of their waste with a dedicated and easy to access drop off area.

“Through providing responsible waste management services we’re not only boosting our region’s liveability, but these new modern facilities also reduce Council’s operational and maintenance costs ensuring we continue to do business better.”
