Environmental Protection

Western Downs Regional Council’s Environment & Health Section is responsible for implementing specific provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1994 and subordinate legislation in relation to some business operations, and general environmental duty.

Business operations involving environmentally relevant activities (ERAs) require approval and registration under this legislation. Below are the relevant application forms required for this registration. Please note that new operations may also require a development application with the Planning Department.

State Government’s Hazardous Industries and Chemicals Branch (HICB) is responsible for the regulation of Flammable and Combustible Liquids Storage. Hopeland Area Soil Sampling

The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) has been undertaking soil sampling in the Hopeland area near Chinchilla, due to particular gases being identified in the soil at depths below two metres in some locations.

EHP have received formal confirmation of the air and water quality test results, and can confirm that the air and water quality in the Chinchilla region remains at safe levels.
