Great events are a huge part of life on the Western Downs.

The region is spoilt for choice when it comes to festivals, performances, markets and social events.

Countless hours of hard work by volunteers are required for these events to flourish in our region.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Economic Development Councillor Donna Ashurst said now was the community’s opportunity to recognise the hard work these volunteers do.

“Australia Day nominations are our chance to congratulate those who put in so much work to make our communities vibrant and exciting,” she said.

“A nomination for the Community Project or Event of the Year Award is a great way to say thank you for months and years of dedication.”

The committee behind the Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races received the award for the Tara District, and the Regional Event of the Year Award in January this year.

Committee member Richard Thornbury said the award was a tremendous achievement for the team.

“We have been doing this for nearly 20 years, and I don’t think people really know how many hours go into preparing this event,” he said.

“After the nomination and the award, our committee was very grateful that our community recognised the efforts we go to, providing our region with a fun, family-friendly event.”

Nominations for the 2019 Community Project/Event of the Year Award close on Wednesday 31 October.
