Council’s stimulus package supports sacred spaces

Western Downs Regional Council is delivering new infrastructure at the Tanderra Cemetery as part of efforts to create a more welcoming space for people to reflect and remember their loved ones.

As part of Council’s $50 million COVID-19 Recovery Package‘s Accelerated Infrastructure Program, a new shade structure and seating will be installed at Chinchilla’s primary cemetery

Council Spokesperson for Recreational Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said these new additions would help create a more comfortable space for cemetery visitors

“Our cemeteries hold great significance for many of our residents, so it was important to us to deliver these works to ensure those who have laid loved ones to rest feel welcome when they come to visit,” Cr Tillman said.

“Currently there is very little shade at the Tanderra Cemetery so I am pleased that Council has included this in the Recovery Package.

“The location of the structure and seating will be strategically situated by the Garden of Angelsproviding a view across the entire cemetery and offering a quiet location for visitors to sit and reflect.

Cr Tillman said the delivery of the structures would not only create a warmer and more inviting space, but also create local jobs in a time where local businesses need the additional support

Council is committed to investing in infrastructure that supports our region and by including the new, modern shaded space in our Accelerated Infrastructure Projects package, we have been able to fast-track the delivery of this project all while supporting our local businesses by contracting the work out to them,” Cr Tillman said.

“This is just one of the many projects being delivered as part of our Recovery Package which aims to secure and create local jobs, energize our economy and support our region through the tough times we have been facing.

The works are due to commence August expected to be completed by September 2020.
