Council Green Lights Chinchilla Solar Project

8 November 2016

Western Downs Regional Council has approved its third solar project in the last 12 months, giving the green light to a development application to build a 20 megawatt solar farm in Chinchilla that will inject 90 construction jobs into the local job market and further boost our regional economy.

  • The wide open spaces of our broad-acre land, lots of Queensland sunshine and our connectivity to power infrastructure created by the CSG sector sees the Western Downs in the midst of its third wave of energy development;
  • Council approved its third green, clean, renewable development in the last 12 months with this latest project a 20 megawatt (MW) solar farm in Chinchilla;
  • The solar farm will be built on the Sturgess-Baking Board Road, approximately six kilometres from Chinchilla and is set to cover 73 hectares; and
  • The construction phase of the project is expected to take up to a year and create 90 construction jobs.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Planning and Environment Councillor Andrew Smith said renewable energy is here to stay with more solar projects planned for our region.

“We’re open for business and making it happen for development that’s good for the Western Downs. And green, clean, renewable energy is great for our region,” he said.

“Western Downs is in the prime position to welcome this growing energy sector and be at the forefront of the transition to alternative energy solutions that are not only sustainable, but better for our environment.

“The ability to connect to existing power infrastructure built by the gas industry, such as feeder lines and substations, is a real drawcard for the renewable energy sector.

“It’s a great economic outcome for our region that we’re attracting renewable energy projects on the back of the current CSG sector, thanks in part, to the synergies that exist between the two industries.”
