25 February 2015

Chinchilla’s Tyler Wostear received top honours on Saturday night when announced as the ‘Western Downs Regional Sports Star of the Year’ for 2014 at a special gala dinner held at the Chinchilla RSL.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Works and Engineering Services and ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year Awards’ Judge Councillor Andrew Smith said Tyler’s incredible achievements and talent in his chosen discipline of Javelin made him a serious contender for ‘Western Downs Regional Sports Star of the Year’ for 2014.

“All of the ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year’ finalists have achieved remarkable feats in their chosen sporting disciplines. The members of the selection panel were amazed and impressed by their talents and had a difficult task in selecting the overall winner,” he said.

“Tyler stood out to us as a talented all-round sportsman which made him a serious contender for the regional title. It was his passion and incredible achievements in his chosen field of Javelin that made him stand out from the other contenders.

“At only 15, Tyler already has three Queensland and one Australian record in Javelin under his belt and can now add ‘Western Downs Regional Sport Star of the Year’ for 2014 to his list of accolades.”

Mayor Ray Brown congratulated Tyler and the other eight finalists on their achievements.

“The strength and talent of our region’s sporting community is remarkable and Council is proud to showcase and recognise their outstanding achievements through the ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year Awards’,” he said.

“Tyler is an exceptional young athlete who has not only contributed significantly to his local sporting community, but has excelled at both State and National levels as a Javelin thrower.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to congratulate Tyler and all of the 2014 ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year Awards’ monthly winners and wish them all the best for the future.”

Mayor Ray Brown also thanked special guest speaker Australian weightlifter, Deb Acason and Craig Hammermeister from major sponsor Black Toyota for taking the time to help present the ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year Awards’.

“It was an honour to present the ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year’ winners with their awards alongside our guest Deb and I thank her for helping us celebrate the outstanding achievements of our region’s sports people,” he said.

“The ‘Regional Sports Star of the Year Awards’ would not have been made possible without the generous support of Black Toyota and I thank Chinchilla Black Toyota Branch Manager Craig Hammermeister for his assistance in presenting the awards.”
