Celebrating our champion Tourism Volunteers of the Western Downs

2 June 2016

The outstanding contributions of 132 Visitor Information Centre Volunteers were acknowledged on 24 May 2016 as part of a special event at the annual Volunteer Forum held at the Bell Bunya Community Centre.

  • The annual Volunteer Forum is held for many volunteers working in our Visitor Information Centres across the region;
  • The forum is an opportunity for the volunteers to network with each other and tourism industry members in the Western Downs;
  • Council presented 28 volunteers with a Queensland Information Centres Association service pin, recognising their time and commitment to our region;
  • A further 32 champion volunteers who were unable to attend the Volunteer Forum, will also receive a service pin;
  • Our Visitor Information Centres are always looking for passionate community members to join our band of volunteers eager to promote the region we are proud to call our home.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Economic Development Councillor Donna Ashurst said volunteer contributions were invaluable to supporting the tourism and economic efforts in our region.

“The Volunteer Forum is a fantastic opportunity for us to come together, share our knowledge and stories, and learn some essential skills for volunteering,” she said.

“Every forum is a great step forward in creating a structured long-term engagement program for our volunteers.”

Cr Ashurst said Visitor Information Centres are an essential part of tourism for our region and the service wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our volunteers.

“Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and to share your local knowledge with tourists visiting our beautiful region,” she said.

“If you have the time, are passionate about our region and want to share this with others, then becoming a volunteer for Council will be a wonderful rewarding experience. All ages are welcome and no specific skills are required, just a willingness to get in and give it a go.”
