Book a date with your Library in 2018

5 February 2018

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Cr Kaye Maguire is looking forward to getting lost in a great read this year.

Only days into February and already broken your New Year’s Resolution? Don’t give up just yet: make a 2018 resolution you can keep, with a little help from your local library.

With nine libraries across the Western Downs offering everything from new releases to the classics, there’s something for every history buff, crime seeker and hopeless romantic to sink their literary teeth into.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said expanding her reading list was at the top of her resolutions for this year.

“With everyone on a phone, behind a computer or in front of a TV, sometimes it’s easy to forget to take a step back from the screen,” she said.

“There’s no better feeling than switching off and getting into a good book. I love to read historical fiction to get an understanding of how people lived and what conditions were like in past times, and I particularly love Australian authors.

“I’m currently reading The Fatal Shore; an epic account of why and how Australia was first used as a convict settlement, by author Robert Harding. This book has a special meaning for me as I have relatives who arrived in Sydney Harbour via the First and Third Fleet.

“Whether it’s joining a Bookclub or just rediscovering an old favourite, make your 2018 resolution to get your nose into a book at our local libraries.”

Library Operations Supervisor Chris Bermingham said immersing yourself in another world is as easy as picking up a book.

“There’s a reading genre for every person on the planet: no matter where your tastes lie, there’s something out there to capture your curiosity and imagination,” she said.

“Step away from your computer, crack open a book, and replenish your soul for a little while.”
