Dalby Regional Saleyards has been held up as an exemplar of livestock management best practices during a recent visit by a delegation from Vietnam as part of a program hosted by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

The visit forms one part of a joint agreement between Meat and Livestock Australia and its Vietnamese counterpart, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Department of Animal Health), to improve animal welfare in Vietnam.

As part of this program, a small group of Vietnamese livestock industry representatives toured Australian facilities, including the Dalby Regional Saleyards, to learn about the development of animal welfare practices, implementation of a livestock traceability system, and to assist in the development of the Vietnamese cattle sector.

Councillor Ian Rasmussen, Council's Spokesperson for Finance, Corporate Services and Business Strategy, said that the Western Downs is recognised as a leader in agribusiness and that this was a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge and expertise with our international visitors.

"Agriculture is a major pillar of the Western Downs’ strong, diverse economy and the Dalby Regional Saleyards is one of the country's largest saleyards, with a history of over 75 years and an average of 200,000 cattle sold through the yard annually," said Cr Rasmussen.

"As a region at the forefront of a changing world, it is gratifying to have had the opportunity to show our facility as a prime example of what can be achieved when world-class facilities and years of expertise are combined with industry-recognised best practice and procedures.

"Council is proud to have had the opportunity to share this experience with our international guests. We are sure that they will return home with the knowledge to build a sound foundation for their own livestock industry."

One of the international guests, Mr. Deng, said that he had found the tour of the Dalby Regional Saleyards to be very educational.

"We do not have anything like your saleyards back in Vietnam, only markets which are very different. I have learned a lot that I will take home with me, particularly in relation to the processes that you use here and your biosecurity protocols," said Mr. Deng.

"I have enjoyed my time in Australia very much so far and I am very impressed with the Dalby Regional Saleyards and the way that it operates. I hope to use a lot of the information I have learned here when I return home to Vietnam."
