Hazel Bird from Jandowae is looking forward to joining in on Council’s free Seniors Week activities.

Seniors, and their family and friends, from across the Western Downs are encouraged to ‘Step into Spring’ this Seniors Week by attending the many events being held across the region from Monday 21 to Friday 25 August.

  • Spring themed events, activities and entertainment will be happening in Chinchilla, Dalby, Jandowae, Miles and Tara;
  • Western Downs Regional Council in conjunction with Banana Shire Council are giving residents in Wandoan the opportunity to attend Seniors Week events in Taroom on Thursday 24 August by providing a free bus service;
  • Any one is welcome and invited to join a Seniors Week event to help celebrate our senior citizens, visit www.wdrc.qld.gov.au or call 1300 COUNCIL for more information on Council’s regional Seniors Week events.

Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said Seniors Week is the perfect time to celebrate all the contributions seniors make to our communities.

“Seniors help create and shape the communities in which we operate, and without them we wouldn’t have the rich history, stories and experiences that make our communities the vibrant places they are today,” she said.

“A number of new elements have been introduced this year that would not be possible to roll-out without the generous support of local community-based organisations and volunteers.

“The jam-packed regional program will have you making your own bowl with the Chinchilla Potters and Painters, doing some good old-fashioned dancing in Dalby, or join in with the fun activities in Tara held in collaboration with Tara 50 and Better Program.

“I’m personally looking forward to checking out the yoga at the Chinchilla Cultural Centre and sitting back to enjoy the special screening of Viceroy’s House at the Ironbark Theatre.”

“I encourage our residents and visitors to get involved in Seniors Week, enjoy the free activities on offer and most importantly take this opportunity to recognise the contribution of our elders in our community.”
