The long-awaited upgrade to the Wandoan Swimming Pool kiosk and change rooms was officially unveiled by Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh and Spokesperson for Council Facilities Councillor Ray Brown last week following the installation of a brand new facility after the existing structure was damaged by a severe storm in 2014.

  • The Wandoan Swimming Pool amenities building was among a number of Council owned facilities damaged during a severe storm event in January 2014;
  • Following an engineering assessment, Council took the opportunity to turn repair works into a complete rebuild of the amenities building providing the community with a safer more accessible facility;
  • The new modernised facility offers top quality: male and female change rooms, toilets and showers; unisex disabled toilets; a mother’s room; first aid; storage room; and a new open plan canteen.

Spokesperson for Council Facilities Councillor Ray Brown said it was great to see the new facility up and running for the summer holidays.

“While the old ‘bricks and mortar’ building did a great job of facilitating pool users over the years, wear and tear along with some pretty extensive damage sustained during the severe storm event in 2014 meant it was more cost effective for our community and Council to start over with a new building,” he said.

Local contractors Wayne Merker Constructions delivered a new look, safer and more accessible facility for the local community.

“The new toilets, change rooms and kiosk not only look fantastic but provide the Wandoan community, swim club, our local schools who use the pool, and visitors a better equipped, safer, and more disability friendly facility.

“Unlike the previous building, the new kiosk also has a clear line of sight to both the toddlers, and the 35m swimming pool making it easier for staff, volunteers and lifeguards to supervise the safety of all pool users.

“We’re extremely proud to have worked alongside local contractors Wayne Merker Constructions to deliver a new look contemporary building, which was delivered under budget and on schedule representing a significant cost saving of $70,000.

“The new Wandoan Swimming Pool facility further highlights our commitment to delivering high-quality, value for money infrastructure that will provide ongoing benefits to our communities well into the future.”
