If you’re interested in learning to play chess, want to improve your skills, or have fun socialising with like-minded people, then we want to hear from you, with Western Downs Libraries seeking expressions of interest to start a Chess Club at the Chinchilla Library.

  • With social Chess Clubs a popular activity in other regional libraries across Queensland, following a customer suggestion Chinchilla Library is keen to see our region put their problem solving and strategy skills to the test;
  • Residents, young and old, are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest to join the Chess Club with the Chinchilla Library;
  • Whether you’re an experienced chess player or interested in learning the art of this popular board game, the Chess Club will be open to all individuals from all experience levels.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the game of chess has many proven benefits for all ages.

“Chess in its various forms has been played for many centuries across the world, and is well-known to provide players with great ‘everyday’ and developmental skills including planning and foresight, increased creativity, problem solving, and improved memory,” she said.

“Playing chess in a social setting, like joining a Chess Club is a great opportunity to make new friends and learn from others.

“I encourage anyone with an interest in playing, or learning to play chess, with a group of like-minded people in a fun and friendly environment to contact the Chinchilla Library.”
