Knowles Pavilion upgrade brings Dalby’s history back to life

18 July 2018

Dalby Family History Society President Jean Town is excited to share the history of Dalby’s Knowles Pavilion

Named after Charles George Knowles, the Dalby Knowles Pavilion has been home to many of Dalby’s significant functions from debutante balls to expos since its opening in 1939. The completed $1.9 million upgrade of the much-loved precinct is set to ensure its history of remarkable events lives on.

With the Knowles Pavilion upgrade underway, the Dalby Family History Society has used this opportunity to explore and share some of Dalby’s interesting history.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Facilities Councillor Ray Brown said it has been a pleasure to work with the group to utilise their extensive knowledge of this piece of Dalby’s history.

“It has been really exciting to engage with the Dalby Family History Society and get their input on the history of this important building,” he said.

“We’ve heard that Charles George Knowles was heavily involved in our community and I think the upgrade of this facility is really going to allow his legacy to live on.”

President of the Dalby Family History Society Jean Town enjoys researching the history of her community and this project has been no exception.

“There is so much rich history in Dalby but unless somebody goes seeking it out it isn’t particularly prominent around town, so I just really like being able to share it,” she said.

“Mr Knowles was the President of the Dalby Show Society, sporting clubs and a band in the town, so the Show Society is very passionate about keeping the identity of Knowles alive.”

Charles George Knowles was also a prominent member of the Dalby community as the owner of a hardware store and operator of the sawmill.

Work on the Knowles Pavilion project is sitting comfortably ahead of schedule and on track to be completed for its official opening in September.
