Keeping it local, PentaCon awarded $3.26 million works tender

20 March 2017

Highlighting the strength of our local construction industry, Western Downs Regional Council are continuing their commitment to supporting local contractors by awarding the tender for works on the $1.96 million Bundi Road and $1.3 million Greenswamp Road Bridge upgrades to Chinchilla firm PentaCon Pty Ltd.

  • PentaCon, who are also undertaking the replacement of Burncluith Road Bridge over Charleys Creek, will commence works to upgrade Bundi Road and Greenswamp Road bridges in April and May this year;
  • The aging, unsafe single lane timber bridges will be replaced with two lane, single span, steel reinforced concrete bridges;
  • With an expected lifespan of 100 years the new bridges, which are designed to current engineering standards, will provide improved safety, enhanced accessibility for locals and significant flood immunity upgrades.

Council Spokesperson for Works and Technical Services Councillor Greg Olm said that Council’s commitment to using local contractors has seen a number of our large-scale projects awarded to local construction firms.

“The awarding of the works tender for the $3.26 million bridge upgrades to PentaCon is a fantastic outcome not only for them, but also for our community,” he said.

“These strategic upgrades to Bundi and Greenswamp Road bridges will not only improve the safety and reliability of these well-used local crossings, but they’ll be ‘future fit’ allowing increased traffic and vehicle loads meaning more opportunities to cater for industry and agriculture expansion in the region.

“With the high-quality of construction projects being delivered locally, confidence in contractors across the region continues to grow and that’s exactly what Council’s ‘Buy Local’ policy is all about.

“We want to continue to see our local construction firms grow and contribute to the development of our region and the awarding of the Bundi Road and Greenswamp Road bridge replacements to PentaCon are just the latest in a number of big projects that have been awarded to local contractors.

“Strong local economies reflect strong local communities. Our open commitment to using local suppliers and working with our local construction firms means that we can keep the cash flowing in our local economy.”

PentaCon Director Vincent Vital said they were thrilled with the outcome of their tender and look forward to working alongside Council to deliver safer bridges for the Western Downs community.

“It’s great that Council are providing local companies like ours opportunities to not only tender for works but also contribute back to our community by awarding contracts to deliver small and large-scale projects locally,” he said.
