Summer Watering Times from October to March

So far, summer across the region has presented us with scorching hot days and storms generating plenty of wind, lightning, thunder and even hail. Unfortunately, what the storms are not producing is significant rainfall.

The combination of high temperatures and low rainfall has taken a toll on some water storage levels in the region which are now dropping quite quickly prompting changes to the current water restrictions to come into effect over the Christmas break.

The Western Downs towns moving to tighter water restrictions as of midnight, Monday 4 January 2016 are:

Brigalow, Chinchilla, Jandowae and Warra will move to Level Three restrictions;
• The most significant change for properties connected to the reticulated water supplies in these towns, is that they will no longer be able to use sprinklers;
• Hand held hoses and permitted drip systems will only be allowed between the hours of 6.30am to 7.30am and 5pm to 7pm for residential properties, with bucket watering permitted at any time except Mondays.

Council Spokesperson for Utilities – Water, Wastewater and Gas Councillor George Moore said that despite the regular occurrence of storms around the region, they were not delivering enough rainfall for a positive impact on water storage levels.

“Communities within our region have seen a number of days this summer where the thermometer has hit 35 or more degrees. Extreme temperatures like we have experienced over the last few months has had a significant effect on storage levels, especially while rainfall has been consistently low,” he said.

“Council appreciates the conscious effort that residents make on a daily basis within their home and workplaces to reduce water usage, and ask that they all continue to be mindful of water efficiency.”

A total ban on all outside water use is in place on Mondays for all water restriction levels.

Adherence to Council’s Water Restriction Policy will be monitored by Council officers during regular patrols.

For more information on all restriction levels and watering times for each town visit the Council’s website or call 1300 COUNCIL.
