Expression of Interest open for prestigious Award

Western Downs Regional Council is proud to announce that we are now delivering The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award to young people in our local communities in 2017.

  • The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an exciting youth development program that is offered by Western Downs Regional Council;
  • The Award is for young people aged between 14 and 25 across the Western Downs;
  • The Award comprises of three levels — Bronze, Silver or Gold, with each demanding participation in Skill, Adventurous Journey, Physical Recreation and Community Service;
  • Western Downs Regional Council is pleased to be offering 18 places in the Bronze Award for 2017.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire believes the Award is an excellent opportunity to empower and connect like-minded young people from across the region.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a fantastic youth development program that provides participants with an opportunity to get involved in something unique,” she said.

“Our participants will develop new skills, explore new places and meet new friends. For students in years 10 to 12, they can also earn credit toward their Queensland Certificate of Education.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is increasingly recognised by tertiary institutions, and can help participants with securing employment.”

Deputy Mayor of Western Downs Regional Council, Councillor Andrew Smith, has fond memories of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award when he was a participant in his youth.

“The Award was a fantastic experience for me, and I had a ball! I have made lifelong friends, simply because the Award allowed me to build friendships with people I wouldn’t usually have met,” he said.

“The elements of teamwork within the Awards have served me well as a Councillor. Building teamwork is not unlike building our communities, so I’d encourage you to get involved!”

Expressions of Interest to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award for 2017 are now being accepted and will close 2 December 2016.
