Signalling another step forward in Western Downs Regional Council’s ongoing strategy to implement sustainable waste management alternatives across the region, Mayor Ray Brown, Councillor Greg Olm, and Regional Director John Bird representing the Minister for State Development, recently marked the start of construction on the Winfields Road Landfill Upgrade at Jandowae.

  • Construction of the estimated $6.57 million upgrade will result in the delivery of a new modern landfill facility, and waste and recycling centre for the local community, replacing the existing uncontrolled dump;
  • Internal civil works are being undertaken by local construction firm Ostwald Bros. with Council’s Works Department carrying out external roadworks;
  • The new waste facility, jointly funded by Council, and the Queensland Government through Minister Dr Anthony Lynham’s department, is expected to be completed by July 2016;
  • It is business as usual with the existing landfill site at Jandowae remaining operational during the construction phase.

Spokesperson for Environmental Health Councillor Greg Olm said the new Winfields Road Waste Facility will be built to some of the most contemporary standards.

“Once completed this modern waste and recycling centre will provide our residents with an effective waste management solution that is environmentally suitable, cost effective, and meets contemporary industry standards,” he said.

“This development is a significant step towards the achievement of Council’s Towards a Waste Wise Western Downs strategy, and the establishment of an Eastern Regional Landfill.

“The Winfields Road Landfill Upgrade has been the result of the invaluable input and assistance from the Jandowae Community Reference Group and our dedicated staff members, it is a credit to their hard work over a long period of time that we’re able to see this project come to fruition.”
