Conversations in English Coordinator nominated for Regional Achievement Award

Western Downs Regional Council are proud to announce that Zita Stark the group Coordinator of Conversations in English Chinchilla (CinE) has been chosen as a semi-finalist for the Access Community Services Cultural Diversity Award in the 2016 Queensland Regional Achievement and Community Awards.

  • Conversations in English is held in our Western Downs Libraries branches in Chinchilla, Dalby, Tara and Miles and is a free friendship group for people who have English as an additional language;
  • The 2016 Queensland Regional Achievement and Community Awards aims to recognise, encourage, and reward the positive achievements of individuals, communities and businesses through regional Queensland;
  • Zita is a passionate member of our community who not only organises the Chinchilla Conversations in English group, but is involved in a number of community organisations and events;
  • Our Conversations in English groups meet regularly, are free to join and are always on the lookout for new members, to find out more visit thee Libraries website or call 1300 COUNCIL.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said it was wonderful to see that Zita’s passion and hard work is being recognised.

“Zita has been very proactive in organising the Conversations in English group in Chinchilla and has provided invaluable support to many of our multi-lingual and culturally diverse residents helping them connect, find friendships and practice their language skills,” she said.

“This is a great outcome for Zita who was nominated by Linda Lawson a member of the Conversations in English group and supported by many community organisations and individuals including her husband Martin.

“Living in a different community is daunting for anyone, and even more so if you aren’t well-versed in the language, so our Conversations in English groups are a great space for people from all walks of life to learn in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

“We would like to wish Zita the best of luck with this award, and regardless of the outcome, we are immensely proud and fortunate to have her as a member of our community.”

Final judging for the Awards will take place on Wednesday 7 September, and the winner will be announced Friday 21 October.
