Community Grants help groups deliver major benefits

4 February 2016

Congratulations to the successful recipients of Round 1 for 2015/16 of Western Downs Regional Council’s Minor Grants, and Local Events and Sponsorship Programs which resulted in the injection of over $67,000 into communities throughout our region.

  • Council’s Minor Grants, and Local Events and Sponsorship Programs support local community organisations to deliver projects and services that help enhance the social and cultural fabric of the Western Downs;
  • This round saw much needed funds allocated to a number of local events and for the purchase of much needed goods and services, from facility improvements and shade gazebos to trade services;
  • Following recent changes to Council’s Community Grants Policy, out-of-rounds applications will no longer be received;
  • Minor Grants Program closes twice annually in April and September;
  • The Local Events and Sponsorship Program application rounds close in February, May and September.

Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development and Health Services Councillor Carolyn Tillman said the aim of the Minor Grants, and Local Events and Sponsorship Programs are to develop, strengthen and enhance the capacity of not-for-profit organisations to provide projects and events of benefit to the community.

“Congratulations to the Round 1 successful recipients. This round of funding has provided a variety of events, associations and clubs a helping hand to deliver projects that improve their services and activities,” she said.

“The Minor Grants, and Local Events and Sponsorship Programs have a positive ripple effect by preserving long standing events, supporting new initiatives and enriching the morale of communities.

“With Council’s support, these groups have improved their facilities and services through such projects as purchasing new equipment, revamping workshop areas, and creating shade-friendly areas for both volunteers and the community to enjoy.

“I strongly encourage our dedicated community groups and organisations to start preparing applications for the Minor Grants Program which closes on Tuesday 5 April and the Local Events and Sponsorship Program which closes on Tuesday 3 May.”
