Western Downs Regional Council has joined forces with AFL SportsReady to give our region’s young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders a competitive edge in the workforce.

Council Spokesperson for Finance and Corporate Services Councillor Ian Rasmussen said sponsorship from Arrow Energy and AFL SportsReady has provided a great opportunity for indigenous youth to take advantage of a full time Business Traineeship with Council.

“There’s no better time than right now to apply for a traineeship, particularly if you’ve just finished school and can’t decide on what’s next for you,” he said.

“With the AFL SportsReady Traineeship you’ll be able to get out and about in our community, get hands-on across Council departments, all while earning and learning in a full time position.

“We want to help our region’s indigenous youth kick-start their careers by skilling them up with real work experience, so I strongly encourage our recent school leavers to apply for this Business traineeship with Council.”

AFL SportsReady Trainee Ally Engle, who started her Business traineeship with Council in August, is encouraging her peers to throw their hat in the ring.

“Already in my short time here I’ve been able to experience how the Dalby Regional Saleyards operates, help out with the Showgrounds and just take in all the hard work that goes into looking after Council’s facilities,” she said.

“A business traineeship is a great way to learn and experience many different opportunities.

“So, if you don’t know what you want to do, I would say don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and try something new. You never know, it could end up being your dream job.”

Applications for the AFL SportsReady Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Business Traineeship close 5pm, Monday 5 January 2018.
