Australian spirit strong amongst communities

8 January 2016

The significant number of nominations received this year for the 2016 Western Downs Australia Day Awards identifies inspirational work within our communities and signifies that the ‘Aussie Spirit’ is plentiful throughout our region.

  • Council received over 70 nominations from across the region;
  • Nominations included both individuals and community groups across local and regional award categories;
  • The judging panel reported that nominations were once again of an exceptionally high standard;
  • Winners will be announced at Australia Day Award ceremonies around the region.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Ray Brown said the response to this year’s awards has been tremendous.

“Selecting winners from a collective of motivated, passionate, and successful contenders has proven an extremely difficult task for the judging panel,” he said.

“Those nominated are often people who fly under the radar, who are working tirelessly behind the scenes and are rarely acknowledged, especially on this scale.  The commitment of these people undoubtedly enriches the liveability and morale of our communities.

“It is important that as communities we recognise the continued selflessness and dedication exhibited by these individuals and groups, and on behalf of Council I sincerely thank all those who took the time to nominate such worthy recipients.

“We can all show our support for our community by attending one of the local ceremonies that will be held around the region on Australia Day.

“Nominations for the 2017 Australia Day Awards open from February and remain open until 5pm Tuesday 29 November 2016, I encourage residents to start considering who you might nominate for next year’s Australia Day Awards,” he said.
