Artists, scientists and astronauts come out to play these school holidays

15 September 2017

Cr Kaye Maguire is ready to go up, up and away these school holidays.

These September school holidays, Western Downs Libraries are inviting budding artists, scientists and astronauts to come out to play, with ‘Up in the Air’ and ‘Fun Palaces’ activities coming to branches across the region.

  • From Monday 18 September to Friday 29 September, the Western Downs Libraries ‘Up in the Air’ school holiday program will see flight-themed activities across branches in Chinchilla, Dalby, Jandowae, Meandarra, Moonie, Miles, Tara and Wandoan;
  • ‘Learn. Fly. Create: Drone Workshops’, suitable for students 13 years and over, will take place in Dalby, Jandowae, Moonie, Chinchilla and Miles; and
  • The free, fan-favourite ‘Fun Palaces’ is back, creating scientists and artists in Bell, Tara and Wandoan.

Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the ‘Up in the Air’ school holiday activities are not to be missed, with a range of fun activities to banish school holiday boredom.

“The ‘Up in the Air’ school holiday program has something to suit everyone: build a solar system, create colourful firework salt paintings, build and decorate wind chimes, or go up, up and away with hot air balloon rockets,” she said.

“Make sure to book in for our exciting Drone Workshops, where students have the opportunity to fly a drone and create their own aerial video. The best part is that the drones aren’t just on offer for the holidays: keep an eye out for drone programs coming to the library throughout the year.

“Fun Palaces is once again back for another year! Climb inside the walls of the Fun Palace and explore neuroscience, computer programming and virtual reality, or get creative with leather-making and origami. It’s a great opportunity to unleash your inner Einstein or Picasso.

“For our libraries to be hosting these incredible programs and activities opens so many doors for the bright and curious minds across our region. The fun on offer at the Western Downs Libraries over the school holidays is endless: you could say that the sky is the limit!”
